
District Attorney Marcus J. Montoya
Before being appointed by Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham as District Attorney of the 8th Judicial District in July 2019, Marcus J. Montoya served as the Senior Trial Attorney in the District Attorney’s office. As Senior Trial Attorney, Marcus prosecuted a wide range of cases, including first-degree murder, child abuse, and drug trafficking.
In 2019, the Eighth Judicial District of New Mexico named Montoya Prosecutor of the Year. A graduate of Taos High School, Montoya earned a bachelor’s degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin and his law degree from the University of New Mexico School of Law.
After his appointment in 2019, Montoya was duly elected District Attorney of the 8th Judicial District in 2020 and was recently re-elected in 2024 and is serving a second four-year term.
District Attorney Montoya also serves as the President of the New Mexico District Attorney Association (NMDAA). The NMDAA is a professional organization organized to support and promote the work of all of New Mexico’s District Attorneys, including but not limited to support, training, and dissemination of information that supports and aids prosecutors in the prosecution of crime throughout the state, legislative matters pertinent to prosecution and any other matters that directly affect prosecutors in the State of New Mexico.
